My Thoughts

"The Walk" A short story

I witnessed today the strangest creatures. Following my morning meal I ventured, as I commonly do, beyond the confines of home to take in the expanse that is Nature. On this day, however, I had witnessed Her first inconstancy, and am certain I shall never forget the encounter. My journey at first appeared to be one of my better adventures, saying much considering the complexity and beauty that is nature. On this day the sun shone brighter and warmer, the breeze felt softer and slower, and the trees all moved to their own rhythm. It was upon my turnaround point that I discovered this newfound irregularity. At first, I was quite certain that my eyes and very mind had been betrayed, but second observation had proved this unpleasant fact. There among the shadows, where the sun shone through in hideous blotches, dwelled a community of vile creatures. I was at first deceived that these creatures were synonymous with the universe they dwelled in, for their complexion boasted of potential beauty--sans the patches of hair and peculiar coverings about them--and that they were perhaps among the superior creations of Nature. Thus I, in mind of optimistic discovery, observed their interactions with great interest, especially since they contained a singular quality of similarity to myself in appearance. I soon learned that these beings are also capable of communication not unike ourselves in some manner. However, I was surprised to find how utterly simplistic their minds are. For one, it took many moments for one of the wretches to even discover that I was there, and it's behavior was quite eccentric in nature. I turned to him and inquired through a basic knowledge of their communicative methods who they were and what it was that they were doing. "Why sir," he replied--he being of a male descent since I soon learned that there were certain types of these beings: males and females--"We are an enlightened folk, and are attempting to better ourselves and the universe." "That is quite a feat" I retorted, "considering the vastness of the world and your lack in size," for he was significantly smaller than myself. "Well, even you must contend that we are unique." At this I had to agree, for this was the first creature in the universe that I had encountered that could speak. At this he explained to me the complexity of his community, though it was somewhat crude. Apparently, they have each their own smaller communities, of which they have a leader (chosen, by ths generation's standards though in the past he explained that they were born into leadership) that has been selected by their development of knowledge. In addition, he argued that they were near the apex of knowing all there is to know about the universe (this fact I could not stifle laughter from, as they were confined to a rather small area and t had taken quite some time for me to even discover them). In fact, he explained, they had harnessed the innate laws of nature and had developed patterns of behavior by which they lived by to bring harmony and comfort to their lives. Of course, this fact was the last one at which I could stay silent over. "Wretch!" I answered, "You are the essence of duality! Never before has such a potential and insignificant being boasted of such importance, when in fact they cannot even rule their own existence! You boast of knowledge, but you know nothing beyond what it is that you have seen, and in fact have never known of My existence until today! You flaunt codes and harmony, but in the brief time I have been here I have seen the basest of acts, the submission to bestality against your common creation, and the domination of will over another. Never before have I had to endure Nature as such, nor endure the sights before me. You are indeed misplaced in this universe. For you hold potential but assert yourselves to heights beyond your understanding! You are a creature, but arguably the weakest in will and most permissive in instinctual desires. What are YOU, that you boast so highly of yourselves? What is your name, since you believe yourself that capacity to have one, so that I may never encounter your presence again?" In defiance this vile vermin faced me, his countenance twisted in a slimy grin so threatening to my patience that I dared crush him and all in his likeness in spite of the offence it would hold against nature and God. He said in such despicable calmness of mind, "I am Man, and we are the human race." At this I left, suffering immensly from strained emotion and the desire to wipe away the spot on Nature's perfect canvass. But at this I had to accept that such an action was not mine to carry out, and felt certain in my mind that they would soon be annihilated altogether and forever forgotten. Such was their fate, I was certain, because they were so near to self-destruction. I will certainly not forget such an encounter as I have witnessed today. Lest Mankind renew their character and will, they will certainly fall from the universe. -------------------- Two starving men cannot be twice as hungry as one; but two rascals can be ten times as vicious as one. William Shakespeare (The Tragedy of King Richard the Third (Clarence at I, iv)) God bears with the wicked, but not forever. Author: Miguel de Cervantes Yeah I just thought of this short story after I did a little thinking about the way the world is and such. Imagination is such a safe place to confide in that often we substitute it for reality. Anyway, as cynical as this story is, I believe that mankind has the potential to change for the better, and that people are willing to make the change.
